  • [NEWS] Jaguar XE SV Project 8: True British Brute

The Jaguar XE is a new compact luxury saloon designed by Jaguar to compete with the likes of the BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-Class, with the top-line XE S having a go with BMW's M division and Mercedes-AMG. However, the Germans have always come up on top for us, they're more powerful, better-built, and the XE doesn't really shine anywhere. The M3 would easily out-perform it at the track, while the C63 is just as comfortable, if not more comfortable than the Jaguar. It looks rather boring as well in my eyes, unlike it's XF and XJ big brothers. So what can possibly Jaguar do to change my mind?

Well, they did it. It's called the XE SV Project 8, and while that sounds like an incredibly pretentious name, the Project 8 is simply astonishing. It's the first XE to be powered by Jag's wonderful 5.0L supercharged V8, and with 592 horsepower, it's the most powerful road-going Jaguar ever made. In comparison, the XFR-S has 550 horsepower, while the M4 GTS makes do with just 500 horsepower. M4 who?!

The Project 8 might look like a race car but it doesn't weigh like one, in fact it weighs in at 1745kg (dry), but thanks to that near 600 horsepower engine and an all-wheel drive system, it'll do 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and top speed is 200mph. Yes.

The Project 8 uses Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s for it's shoes and is 265mm wide at the front, while the rear is 305mm wide, that is massively wide for what is essentially a sedan.

There's a lot of amazing technical feats that we'd like to talk about but we know you guys aren't interested, so here's something else that might get you interested: it's LHD only. So if you're drooling over this fat cat, you might want to consider that before ordering one. The problem is that the XE's engine bay didn't have the V8 in mind during the design process, and because the engine is too long, for packaging reasons it can only be left hand drive. It probably can be right hand drive but considering RHDs are the minority, it's probably too expensive for Jaguar to manufacture.

Still interested? Well UK price is said to be at £149,995 before you go crazy with the options, which is around the same as a well-specced Porsche 911 Turbo S. The Project 8 is pricey, but considering the M4 GTS was just around £20,000 off and is nowhere near as powerful as the Project 8, we reckon it's one hell of a deal. And besides, look at it! Look at it and honestly tell us that it doesn't look good. You can't, can you?

Anyway, if you're interested only 300 is going to be made, so best get in line. However, if you're willing to wait and you don't much care for such a vulgar car, a "normal" non-limited XE with a V8 might possibly be produced. Fingers crossed.
