5 Ways Car Makers Enhance Their Car Sound

As technology advances, cars today are getting better and faster. The sportscar of today can quite easily be as fast as the exotic supercars of the past. In terms of looks, many cars today looks just as good as the cars of yesterday.

But like it or not, in recent years car manufacturers have been replacing engine displacement with noise-sapping forced induction. Improving fuel-efficiency, for even more power and torque. At the cost of noise. Sound proofing in cars are also very good these days, it means that we don’t hear much wind and tire noise, but induction and exhaust noise are also muffled. This lack-of-noise is definitely an issue in sportscars and particularly for petrolheads. So, what have the car manufacturer’s done to address this issue? Here are five solutions from different car makers.

    Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ: Sound Pipe

    img_5547.jpg

This is the most simple of them all. The sound pipe runs from the car’s intake manifold into the cabin. On the Toyota GT86, the sound is piped into the footwell. The problem with this is, you get a buzzy and disturbing intake blare whenever you rev the car above 4000rpm. Some like this, some people doesn't like this sound.

    BMW Active Sound

    img_5904scdiztag_zpsff6be4f7.jpg

This is probably the most controversial of all the systems. This system is installed on all M Division and M Performance cars, the system plays a synthesized reproduction of the engine through the car’s speakers.
BMW’s Active Sound has received quite a lot of criticism, BMW decided to change it for the new M3 and M4. The sound through the speakers in the latest M car only makes up about two to three per cent of the overall sound you hear in the cabin, and it’s is an amplification of what’s going on under the bonnet, rather than a reproduction.

Ford Fiesta and Focus ST: Sound Symposer
Like the GT86/BRZ, the Focus and Fiesta ST has the sound pipe to fed the noise into the cabin, but because it’s annoying, Ford’s ‘Sound Symposer,’ is the solutions you need.

Just like the GT86/BRZ it still has pipe running from the intake manifold to the back of the dashboard, but it’s been fitted with an electronically-controlled flap. The flap opens and closes depending on the gear, throttle position and engine speed, so you only get the intake noise when the computer thinks you’d like the hear the noise.

    Volkswagen’s Soundaktor and Exhaust Soundaktor

Next is the ‘soundaktor’ (sound actuator), which can be found in any sportscar that’s been made under Volkswagen. It’s a small electronic resonator about the size of a hockey puck, installed at the base of the windscreen on the bulkhead. It emits a sort of buzzy, fizzy noise. This system is used on Volkswagen’s sportscar such as the Audi S3 and the Skoda Octavia vRS.

There’s also the Exhaust Soundaktor, which is used on diesel cars from the VW group. These sound devices are put in the exhaust system, which are speakers in two auxiliary channels of the exhaust. The system puts out a low-pitched, roaring sound. The idea is so that a diesel engine would sound more like a petrol engine.

.....this is sad...good engine note should be a by-product of a good engine...no thanks to government noise and emission legislation and those stupid marketing people....an air cool flat six sounds good becoz it's air cooled and a flat six, not some marketing mumbo jumbo...
